Cleaning across Houghton Regis, Linmere and Bidwell West

Start with the estates, because that is where most of the town lives. Houghton Regis had 3,750 people in 1959. Tithe Farm was laid out in the early 1960s and took its name from the tithe barn that stood on what is now Tithe Farm Road, and Parkside followed. Both were built under the London overspill agreements, rehousing families who came to work in the car and truck factories in and around Dunstable and Luton, and both still run off their own parades of shops: the neighbourhood centre on Tithe Farm Road and the row at Hillborough Crescent on one, the centre on Parkside Drive and the row at Neptune Square on the other. The parish is still divided into three wards named after all of it, Houghton Hall, Parkside and Tithe Farm. Housing of that age and origin has a recognisable shape inside: fitted carpet through the hall, stairs and landing, boxed-in staircases, gloss-painted joinery, and kitchens too small to work round while somebody is cooking. Right to buy has mixed the tenures since, so two identical houses on one road can be a family home of forty years and a let that changes hands every eighteen months.

Renting works differently here to Bedford or Luton, and landlords ask about it, so it is worth putting plainly. Central Bedfordshire operates mandatory HMO licensing only. There is no additional scheme and no selective licensing area, so a house becomes licensable at five or more people from two or more households sharing facilities, and nothing below that. How people travel is the other difference. Houghton Regis has no railway station. The guided busway runs from the town centre through Dunstable to Luton and on to the airport, and the M1 is a few minutes away at junctions 11 and 11a. Most working households leave the town in the morning, and tenancies end when a job changes rather than when a term does, which spreads void weeks right across the calendar instead of piling them into one summer.

New build is the loudest thing happening. Linmere has its own community building at the Farmstead, with a hall, a cafe and retail units, a Lidl store, an adventure playground and street names nobody outside the site recognises yet, Elmers Gate and Waterslade Way among them. Thornhill Primary now runs on two sites, the original one on Grove Road and a Passivhaus teaching block on the Silver Birch site at Linmere that took the school from 210 places to 630. Barratt, Bellway, Persimmon, Dandara and Stonebond are all building there. Over at Bidwell West the local centre is already open, with a day nursery, a convenience store, retail units and a coffee shop under 52 affordable flats. Because both schemes are spread across fifteen years or so, they do not hand over in one go. Plots come free a handful at a time, which means sparkle cleans in small batches to a date, then a second clean weeks later for the buyer, once the furniture is in and the fine dust has worked its way out of the ceiling voids again.

Then there is the chalk, which is the one local thing that changes the actual cleaning. The town sits on the northern slope of the Chilterns and the ground has been quarried for as long as anyone has records. J.D. Forder's lime works at Sewell and Blows Downs passed to Blue Circle in 1912, a cement works was built beside Townsend Farm, and chalk came out of Puddlehill and the pit opposite from 1926 until production stopped in 1971. The chimneys stood over the town from 1925 and were demolished in 1976. The old pit is orchids and butterflies now, looked after by the Wildlife Trust. Chalk still comes out of the ground on every groundworks job in the town, and it behaves nothing like plaster dust: dry it powders and drifts, wet it turns to a paste that smears across glass instead of coming off. The water is hard for the same reason, drawn off the chalk, so kettles, shower screens, taps and toilet pans in Houghton Regis fur up faster than they do in a lot of places we work.

Commercially the parish holds several separate patches rather than one estate. Woodside Industrial Estate, roughly 265 acres and 1.4 million sq ft of it, sits mostly on the Houghton Regis side of the boundary with Dunstable and takes the distribution and warehouse floorspace. Houghton Hall Business Park on Porz Avenue next to it is mostly offices. Townsend Industrial Estate off Houghton Road is smaller and mixed: light industrial, storage, trade counters and services, and close enough to walk to the High Street. Retail sits on the High Street and Bedford Square, with a large Morrisons and All Saints View, the 168 independent living apartments built on the old Co-operative site. The Woodside Link opened on 13 April 2017 and the A5 to M1 link a month later, so a van can reach the units from junction 11a without touching the middle of town, which matters when the High Street is as narrow as this one.

Schools are a bigger employer here than most people outside the town would guess, and Houghton Regis has already moved to two tiers while parts of neighbouring Dunstable have not. There are six primary schools: Tithe Farm Primary on Tithe Farm Road, Hawthorn Park on Parkside Drive, Thomas Whitehead CE on Angels Lane, St Vincent's Catholic on Hammersmith Gardens, Houghton Regis Primary on St Michael's Avenue, and Thornhill Primary across its two sites. Houstone School, the town's secondary and the first Central Bedfordshire has built here, opened on the Kingsland Campus off Parkside Drive in September 2023, after archaeologists worked through Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman remains on the site as a condition of the planning consent. The Chiltern School's Kingsland campus, a special school taking ages three to nineteen, stands on the same site, and the new leisure and community centre opened alongside them in March 2025. All of it needs Enhanced DBS checked cleaners, term-time routines and holiday deep cleans booked well ahead, because every site in the town breaks up in the same week.
