MyT Clean & Maintenance started in Bedford in 2021 and still works out of 3 Grove Place, MK40 3JJ, a few minutes' walk from the Town Bridge. There are 25 of us. Being based in the middle of town settles the dull questions early: where a van can legally stand, and which addresses mean a long walk from the nearest space.
The built-up area held 167,446 people at the 2021 census, a figure that takes in Kempston and Biddenham, and the housing behind it is unusually mixed. Victorian and Edwardian terraces run through the centre and out along De Parys Avenue. North of them is the grid locals still call Black Tom, between the two Park Roads, Tavistock Street and Foster Hill Road; much of it came down in the early 1960s for the Bedford Central Redevelopment Area, which put up Beauchamp Court, Roise Court and the maisonettes on Priory Street. Queens Park mixes post-war housing with older terraces cut into flats. Putnoe, Brickhill and Goldington are largely 1960s and 70s family houses, carpeted throughout. Newer again: Wixams, Great Denham and Biddenham Park on the Bromham Road. Inside MK40 to MK42 you have communal stairwells, bay windows, fitted carpet everywhere and plots still coming out of plastic.
Our home patch is MK40, MK41 and MK42, plus the MK43 and MK44 villages strung along the Great Ouse either side of the town, from Bromham and Sharnbrook upriver to Willington and Great Barford downriver. Tara ran construction projects before she started the company, at Laing O'Rourke and Nationwide Platforms, so MyT is organised more like a site than a cleaning round.

- No drive. 3 Grove Place, MK40 3JJ sits in the town centre near the Embankment, so most of MK40, MK41 and MK42 is a short run. The A6 runs north to south through the town, the A421 southern bypass takes us out to the M1 at junction 13 and down to Kempston Hardwick, the A428 heads east towards St Neots, and the A603 Cardington Road covers the Priory Business Park side.

Licensing, term dates and a decade of building work
Bedford has a large private rented sector for its size, and the borough council runs an additional HMO licensing scheme on top of the mandatory one. Many terraces around Queens Park, Castle Road and the centre are split into flats and rooms, and licensed ones carry conditions on how they are kept. A void clean here is not only about getting the next tenant in. Somebody may have to evidence how the property was left, so we work room by room and keep the record as we go.
Two education sites shape the calendar. The University of Bedfordshire's Bedford campus is on Polhill Avenue in MK41, with the 517-room Polhill Park residence beside it, and Bedford College is on Cauldwell Street in MK42. Between them they put a lot of private lets around Queens Park and Cauldwell back on the market inside the same few weeks. If a tenancy ends in July or August, book earlier than feels necessary.
There is more building work ahead of Bedford than most people here can remember. Universal began ground works at Kempston Hardwick on 12 January 2026, on 476 acres of former brickworks land three miles south of the centre. Those are the same brickfields that changed the town once already: from 1951 the London Brick Company and Marston Valley recruited across southern Italy, and more than 7,500 men came here over the following decade on four-year contracts. Bedford still has one of the largest Italian communities in Britain.
East West Rail wants to replace Bedford St Johns with a two-platform station closer to the hospital, though the application to build the line is not due until 2027, and Wixams is heading for 4,500 homes with its own station going up off Meadow Road. Both mean site offices, welfare units, phased handovers and more people renting locally.
The Embankment is still the middle of the place. The River Festival returns on 18 and 19 July 2026, with the council expecting more than 250,000 people across two days over the promenade, the river, the parkland and the town centre. It is free to attend, so the clear-up is as big as the event. We already work at that scale at Reggae Land at the Milton Keynes National Bowl.
Commercial work here is spread, not clustered. Priory Business Park sits south-east of town where the A421 meets the A603 Cardington Road. There are offices around the High Street and Midland Road, units towards Elstow and Kempston, and schools across the borough. Our street is in a controlled parking zone. Where will the van go?
Give us the address when you book and we will sort access first. The borough runs controlled parking zones in parts of town, and a resident permit does not guarantee a space on your own street, so a visitor permit helps if you have one. Some terraced streets near the centre are too narrow for a van. Say so and we will plan where to unload.
Can you clean a licensed HMO or a shared student house between tenancies?
Yes. Bedford Borough runs an additional HMO scheme alongside the mandatory one, so many shared houses around Queens Park, Castle Road and the centre are licensed with conditions on how they are kept. We clean room by room and keep a record of each one, so there is something to show the tenant, the agent or the council. Check the council's pages for what your licence requires.
Do you do builders cleans at Wixams, Great Denham and Biddenham Park?
Yes, including phased handovers where plots come available a few at a time. Send the plot numbers and handover dates and we will tell you what we can staff.
Can you clean our offices at Priory Business Park outside working hours?
Usually. Most commercial work we do in Bedford runs before people arrive or after they have gone, and Priory Business Park is a short run down the A603 Cardington Road. Tell us the window you need and we will say straight away whether we can cover it.
Kempston has its own town council. Do you treat it as Bedford or as a separate area?
As Bedford. Kempston is its own town and parish two miles south-west, the borough's only one with a town council, but it shares the same built-up area and sits in MK42 and MK43 with us. Same for the villages along the Great Ouse. Worth knowing for the far ones that the bridge at Harrold is single-file on traffic lights, so give us the postcode and we will plan the run.
