The office is at 3 Grove Place in Bedford, and the A603 runs out of town through Willington, Moggerhanger and Blunham and finishes at the Sandy roundabout on the A1, eight miles and about twenty minutes later. So a Sandy job is planned the way a job across Bedford is planned: around your check-out time, the school run on Bedford Road, or the shift change on Sunderland Road, not around a long drive.

Overspill estates, a Georgian bridge and a nature reserve on the hill
Start with the houses, because there are two kinds and they clean differently. Sandy grew fastest in the 1970s, when London overspill housing was built between Sunderland Road and St Neots Road, and that is still most of the town: family houses on estates with driveways, fitted kitchens on their second or third refit, and carpets that have taken fifty years of families. The older Sandy is the High Street, Station Road and the streets around Market Square, which has the name of a market town without the history of one, since the town was only granted the right to hold a market in 1925. Those are the narrow-fronted houses with a step straight onto the pavement, where parking and a tap are settled at booking rather than on the morning.
The town's name is older than any of it. It is in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Sandeia, from the Old English for a sand island, after the low sandy hills on the eastern side that form part of the Greensand Ridge. The Great North Road used to pass through Girtford on the west side rather than the centre, crossing the Ivel at Girtford Bridge, built between 1780 and 1782 to the designs of the Rutland architect John Wing. The A1 bypass took the through traffic away in the 1950s and 60s, which is why Girtford and Beeston feel like the villages they were before the town joined them up.
Up on the ridge is the biggest name in Sandy. The Lodge was built in 1870 by Arthur Wellesley Peel, the formal gardens were laid out after Sir Malcolm Stewart bought it in 1934, and the RSPB moved its headquarters there in 1961 and has never left. The reserve around it now runs to 220 hectares, about 540 acres, of heath, acid grassland and woodland looking down over the Ivel valley, with a visitor centre in the Swiss Cottage from the 1850s. Caesar's Camp, the Iron Age hill fort, still overlooks the town from the same ridge, and the Sandy Heath mast on the far side stands 244 metres tall. A hill like that is heath and pine, so on that side of town the sand comes indoors on shoes and on dogs.
The working end is Middlefield Industrial Estate, reached off Sunderland Road east of the centre, with a builders' merchant in Travis Perkins and Marshalls' concrete works among the occupiers, and the smaller units around Tyne Road and the London Road estate. Then there is what is coming. In March 2026 the Housing Secretary named Tempsford, north of Sandy on the far side of the A1, as one of seven proposed new towns, with up to 40,000 homes around a new East West Rail station that would meet the East Coast Main Line. A town of 12,000 with something that size next door will feel it in two waves, the same two we already see at Biggleswade: first plot cleans and sparkle cleans while sites are live, then, a few years on, the same houses turning over as lettings.
