Will jet washing damage our block paved drive at Berryfields?
Not if the sand goes back. The wash itself is fine on block paving, but it lifts the kiln dried sand out of the joints, and blocks with empty joints move and let weeds through. We re-sand and brush in before we leave. If any blocks have already sunk we will tell you, because washing will not fix that.
We are in Haddenham with a wychert wall along the drive. Can you still clean the drive?
Yes, the drive. Not the wall. Wychert is chalky earth and straw and it fails when it gets wet, which is why those walls are capped with tile or thatch in the first place. We sheet the base of the wall, keep the lance angled away from it and work the drive in from that side. Say it is wychert when you book.
Is there a time of year you will not wash the outside of a Kingsbrook house?
Spring and early summer need a look first. Kingsbrook was built with the RSPB, with swift bricks and bat boxes set into the walls, so we check what is above the patio before the lance comes out. Drives, paths and patios are usually fine all year. Anything at gable height in nesting season we talk through with you first.
Our sandstone patio is covered in black spot. Will it come off?
Usually, but not with pressure alone. Black spot is lichen rooted into the stone, so it needs a treatment left to work and sometimes a second visit before it properly fades. Around the wychert houses at Haddenham, Cuddington and Dinton we keep both water and chemical well away from the walls, because chalk and straw will not take soaking. The sandstone itself is fine on a lower setting.
